Christmas. The

(Velma Kelly), Richard Gere (Billy Flynn), John C. Reilly (Amos
Hart), Christine Baranski (Mary Sunshine), Queen Latifah (Mama
Morton), Taye Diggs (Bandleader), Lucy Liu (Go-To-Hell
Kitty), Colm Feore (Martin Harrison), Mya (Mona), Dominic West (Fred
Caseley), Deidre Goodwin (June), Katerina Chtchelkanova (Hunkyak), Susan Miser

Set in
the roaring 20's, this is the story of Chicago chorus girl Roxie Hart
(Zellweger), who shoots her unfaithful lover (West). Landing in jail, she meets
Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones), another chorus girl and murderess, currently enjoying
media attention and legal manipulation, care of her attorney, Billy Flynn
(Gere), king of the old "Razzle Dazzle." Soon enough, however, Flynn
takes Roxie's case as well, and Velma finds herself old news as Roxie is now
the most famous murderess in town, on her way to getting out of jail and
becoming a star. The two go through a series of attempts at getting what they
both want (often conflicting): freedom and fame... (Latifah plays Mama Morton,
a prison matron; Baranski plays a tabloid reporter; Reilly plays Roxie's
husband; Diggs plays a band leader).

RECAP
THELONIOUS MONK TRIBUTE FEATURING ALANA BRIDGEWATER
I had to give a special mention to Frank Francis for
his efforts in celebrating jazz in the format of the Black Underground Project
that he holds on a regular basis. This
past Saturday, the mega-talented Marc Auguste, Jr.
took the formidable challenge of playing the complex piano stylings of Thelonious Monk.
He more than succeeded with his interpretations! Add to that the blend of other talented musicians, Meiron Kelly,
Jack Zarowski and Mark Hundevad and you’ve got a hot instrumental jazz
vibe. Add to the mix again by bringing
in vocalist Alana Bridgewater and you’ve got magic. Also featured was the film presentation: “Straight No Chaser” - A
look at Thelonious Monk which gave us the history behind the man being
celebrated that evening. It
was an incredible evening for all those in attendance. Stay tuned for future jazz showcases!

REMY SHAND IN
CONCERT – TONIGHT - NOVEMBER 28
Shand brings his distinctive approach to soul to town. An artist who attacks the boundaries of
R&B, pop and alternative with his own timeless fusion, as undeniable as it
is unconventional. Some call his sound
'fresh,' others compare him to '70's greats Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder while
still others call him the best Canadian export in years. But whatever you call
Winnipeg, MB native Remy Shand there is no denying his ability to capture the
power of soul in every note and leave audiences begging for more. Shand's debut album, The Way I Feel first
flew up the charts after it's release earlier this year, with singles like
"Take A Message", "Rock Steady", and the title track
"The Way I Feel" receiving numerous plays around North America;
Shand's name quickly became synonymous with soul and talent. He recently
received two honours at the 2002 Prairie Music Awards, Best Producer and Best
Pop Recording. A self-taught musician,
Shand started on acoustic guitar and bass around age 12, and later picked up
the keyboards and writing; "Everlasting," "Take a Message"

INDIA.ARIE: FANTASTIC “VOYAGE”
Excerpt from www.eurweb.com - by Kenya
Yarbrough
She topped the Grammy nominations last year as a new artist without the massive
sales of many, snagging seven nods, but she left the ceremony empty handed.
Still, soul songstress India.Arie was never empty-hearted. She's kept her head
up and raised the bar again on soul music, heading to the studio and completing
her sophomore album, “Voyage to India.”
“I
answer all disappointment and negativity with a song,” Arie said. “That's my
way of releasing things, and a smile.”
The album was released in late September with a Top 10 bow. And like her
debut set, the platinum-selling “Acoustic Soul,” the album has quietly moved
more than 500,000 units reaching Gold certification status and is expected to
exceed the sales of her first album. Meanwhile, she's maintaining a legion of
loyal fans, new and old. Arie says
that she is still surprised by how much audiences really enjoy her music –
which is extremely contrary to the teenybopper or bling-bling hip-hop that is
terribly popular. “I was caught way
off guard,” she said of her early following. “I know that the things I talk
about in my music and the gentleness of the production is not the popular
thing. So to be honored [for it] was very surprising and very satisfying.” Arie says she was hungry to get into the
studio with material she'd written while on the road touring with Sade in 2001.
And she considers her latest album a true representation of India.Arie and her
faith. In fact, India.Arie says the key to the new album is a track called
"God is Real."
Speaking of God, it turns out that Halle Berry ain’t the only one to leave out
God in an award acceptance speech, EUR readers. Soul songstress India.Arie
copped to her own forgetfulness when she accepted her BET Award earlier this
summer. “Somebody 2-wayed me and said,
‘You didn’t thank God.’ But God knows my heart, I sing about God in all my
songs,” she said. Arie also mentioned how receiving Essence Awards and BET
Awards following her Grammy upset meant much more to her, especially now that
she understands a little bit more about the politics of entertainment award
ceremonies. “Now I understand what
awards are and what they're not and what acceptance is and which acceptance
matters and which acceptance doesn't. It’s been a journey,” she admitted. And along the way, Arie has been acclaimed
and raved about by music critics, industry-ites, and fellow artists. Sade
personally asked her to join her on her tour last year, she's also been asked
to do tracks with John Mellancamp and Cassandra Wilson, among others. There is one particular collaboration,
quiet as it’s kept, that Arie loves. She recently did a song with new artist DJ
Rogers, Jr. for his debut CD. “The
song is called ‘Beautiful Love, Wonderful Love.” DJ Rogers and I are both
Libras and we both started talking and he told me he had a song that he might
get [for] Jill Scott and I said, ‘Let me hear it,’ and then I said, ‘I wanna be
on it.’ So he went to the studio the next day and wrote it and cut it. I love
that song. And then another Libra, Roy Hargrove, was walking down the hallway
in the studio and we said, ‘Hey, come play,’ and he came in. That song was
meant to happen. I love that song.”
Arie took her musical love story on the road this fall and is currently
on tour in support of the new album. She performs at the Universal Amphitheater
in Los Angeles tonight. The trek ends Jan. 25 in St. Louis, MO. Check her website
(www.indiaarie.com) to see if she’ll be stopping in a city near you.
UNV aka THE POWW BROTHERS BRING THE POWWER OF SOUL MUSIC WITH
A POWWER MOVE
Excerpt from www.eurweb.com - Jazzmyne
PR / Mekeda / Makeda@jazzmynepr.com
R&B
music is about to receive a real "powwer" boost! The return of the
soul dripping, heart-tugging ballad is imminent as the "powwer"
behind the love ballad has returned! The Poww Brothers, hailing from the
original Motown are bringing the heat, and it's a "powwerful" thing.
With Powwer Moves Records, their new label distributed by Orpheus/EMI Music,
brothers J. Poww and Shawn Poww emerge as music's "powwer" duo. As artists formerly signed to Maverick
Records, UNV aka The Poww Brothers have nothing new to prove. They were
Madonna's first urban act on her label, and made R&B history scorching the
quiet storm format with the success of "Something's Going On," a gold
selling single. Their success saw them not only touring with Madonna, but
working with the likes of David Foster, Brian McKnight, Soul Shock and
Karlin. It's no question that
Faithful, their new CD under the UNV / Poww Brothers moniker, will duplicate,
if not succeed their initial success. Men, hold onto your ladies and ladies,
hold onto your hearts because the Poww Brothers are ready to make you believe
in love all over again. Now with the
release of their highly anticipated album, "Faithful." The Poww
Brothers are ready to make their own noise. And the first single,
"Faithful" will have even the most bitter of hearts looking for true
love. With a combination of handsome good looks, a memorable melody and
thoughtful lyrics, The Poww Brothers prove that what's old is new again and
that every generation can relate to passion, love, and trust. The debut single, "Faithful"
harkens the era of the old-fashioned love ballad. Sincere, soothing and
satisfying, "Faithful" fills you up with feel good sentiments. A
future classic in the making, "Faithful" is a vivid reminder of what
good music and good singing is.
"As Detroit natives," cites J. Poww, who penned most of the
project, and also doubles as the CEO of the label, "we understand the
power and importance of the legacy we represent. We have lived and breathed the
sweet sounds of R&B right under our own roof. Our mother, her sister and
four brothers all sang. So our mission to resurrect the R&B music scene is
a very serious one."
The mission is evidenced in tracks like "Blown Away" and "Can't
Leave." From the arrangements to the lyrics to the delivery, the titles
are emotive, poignant, and irresistible. Singles like "Say You Wanna
Leave" reach deep within, while "Remember How Sweet" sears.
Tracks "Hotta the Body" and "Let's Get It On" pick up the
pace however, incorporating hip hop flavor for club friendly, shake it fast
party anthems. "Faithful is not
only our gift to the ladies, but to the fellas as well. We felt today's music
was missing something. We have a history of ballads, but with Faithful, we mix
it up and provide something for everyone, with the result being a range of all
fill-good music. "Something's Going On" from our UNV days was just
the tip of the iceberg. Now UNV -The Poww Brothers, we are ready to give it all
we got," offers Shawn. When two
minds come together as one, the result can be very "powwerful." The
Poww Brothers are making a "powwer" move. Get ready to receive the
blow!
THE NEW DAVE HOLLISTER: THINGS CHANGE AS SINGER RELEASES HIS
THIRD SOLO ALBUM
Excerpt from www.eurweb.com - by Renee
Simms
Dave Hollister’s third album, “Things In the Game Done Changed,” may be his
last as an R&B singer. “I
really, honestly think this is my last R&B album,” he says. The soulful balladeer is not certain what
he’ll do next but he knows he’ll be doing God’s work. “I feel like He’s got something else for me to do, some other
people for me to reach. That’s all I want is His will for my life.” Things really have changed. This is not the
angry Dave Hollister with the babymama drama that we heard on “Ghetto Hymns” or
“Chicago ‘85 ... The Movie.” Dave Hollister has returned with a new attitude, a
new perspective, but with the same incredible voice. So what has changed in his
life? The first change was Hollister’s
decision to leave his former label, DreamWorks, and to sign with Motown. “Not trying to throw shade [at DreamWorks]
but they just really don’t know what to do with black music. They know how to
blow up the Papa Roaches and the Nellie Furtados and the Alien Ant Farms but
they don’t know how to blow up the Dave Hollisters ...”
At Motown, Hollister has teamed with executive Kedar Massenburg and he couldn’t
be happier with this situation. “Kedar
is a person that I’ve always looked up to. He’s the reason this whole neo-soul
thing is even happening right now. He had big success with D’Angelo then he
went to Erykah Badu – she blew up – then India.Arie, she blew up. Everything
the man touches is platinum plus."
“Now I feel that I’m in a place where somebody knows what they’re doing
and knows my music and is passionate about the same thing I’m passionate about
... Hopefully, I can’t lose right now. I’m really excited because I know the
man knows what he’s doing.”
The other change in Hollister’s life is his relationship with God. “All of my life I’ve been in the church but
God really came and convicted me about some of the things I was doing and the
way I was living my life ... the drugs and the women and the extra, sexual
things. “I’m really a Christian now
and I’m walking right now so I can’t do what I did before.” Passion for religion and music comes
naturally to Hollister. His father was a musician. His mother is a pastor. And
Hollister sings R&B like he’s singing in church. His singing conveys real
emotion similar to two people that he admires – Patti Labelle and Mary J.
Blige. Hollister has toured with
Labelle and Blige and he was a background singer for both women, as well. He
has also done background vocals for Bruce Hornsby and he was an original member
of the R&B group Blackstreet. But
despite his talent and resume, Hollister has gotten little recognition as a
solo artist. He hopes this will change now that he’s at Motown. He’s surrounded
himself with people he respects. Like Kedar Massenburg, like R&B singer
Tank, who is his friend and a producer on “Things.” Like label-mate
India.Arie. “People don’t know how
incredible Tank is. That’s my man. [And] India.Arie is a talent. She’s a
blessing, she’s a gift to this industry.”
No longer angry, Hollister is happy about his life and optimistic about
the future. “I’m
so clear about my path,” he says. “I feel so much better now. I feel like
there’s nothing I can’t do.”
TLC'S NEW ALBUM '3D' ENTERS THE CHARTS WITH A TOP TEN DEBUT
Excerpt from www.eurweb.com - Arista
Records / Laura Swanson / Laura.Swanson@bmg.com / Chris Chambers / Chris.Chambers@bmg.com
TLC
-- the biggest-selling girl group of all time -- have returned triumphantly
with their new album 3D, which entered the Billboard Pop and R&B/Hip-Hop
charts at No. 6 and No. 4 respectively, announced Antonio "L.A."
Reid, President and CEO, Arista Records. Released November 12, the album sold
over 143,000 in its first week while riding a wave of critical acclaim. Rolling
Stone weighed in with a four-star review, the New York Daily News hailed it as
"the group's most enjoyable and clever album" and the New York Post
hands-down called it "the album of their career." The album's first single "Girl
Talk" exploded on radio last month, claiming the No. 1 most added spot on
Top 40, Rhythm/Crossover, and Urban Mainstream formats. Their elaborately
conceived, multi-setting video -- directed by Dave Meyers in their Atlanta
hometown -- is receiving wide exposure with top rotation on MTV, VH1, BET. Reporting
on a visit to the set, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said, "The whole
scene speaks with command and color. Giant lettered billboards point commuters
to various destinations...It looks like the Japan of movies or dreams."
The album is a tribute to the group's Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes, who
recorded four songs for the album before her tragic death in April of this
year. TLC's two other founding members -- Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and
Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas -- have made a number of high-profile TV
appearances in conjunction with the release of 3D, where they've talked
candidly about how special Lisa was to their unique chemistry. T-Boz and Chilli
stopped traffic in New York's Times Square when they were joined by 1,500
out-of-school fans and appeared on MTV's "TRL" debuting the new video
for "Girl Talk" on the Jumbotron outside the MTV studios. The group
was also profiled on "Primetime Live," "The Today Show,"
"CBS Early Show," "The View," "BET Tonight with Ed
Gordon" and "Access Hollywood" among other programs. The 3D album features all the
trademark TLC forthrightness they captured on their 1993 debut album Ooooh...On
The TLC Tip, 1994's CrazySexyCool and 1999's FanMail. The track
"Quickie," for example, directly addresses men and their sexuality. "Men
talk about women in relationships all the time and they don't get any flack for
it," Chilli told the New York Daily News. "We're just coming from a
women's point of view...we were always fun, exciting, experimental." T-Boz
told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the song "Hands" is based
on a real incident in the past, where she saw a boyfriend dancing with another
woman. "I was like, 'Oh no the hell he ain't.' See, these TLC songs are
for real!"
But for T-Boz and Chilli, the success is bittersweet. In an Associated Press
interview, Chilli recently said, "Right now, we're just handling one thing
at a time ... It's a very emotional point in time in our lives." For further information please visit our
website at www.arista.com
