This newsletter is designed to welcome all the new members, give you some
updated entertainment-related news and provide you with our upcoming event
listings. Welcome to those who are new members. I will also
highlight events for the next 10 days so click on EVENTS.
1. Universal
music sponsors honey jam showcase - Auditions to be held ON june 7, 2002
Universal Music is
proud to announce its sponsorship of the Honey
Jam 2002 Urban Music Showcase.
Performers are invited to audition on June 7th at 6pm at the Phoenix
Concert Theatre in Toronto; artists outside of Ontario are encouraged to submit
their audition on videotape, along with photo and bio. The Honey Jam Showcase
will be held at the Phoenix on August 15th, 2002.
The Honey Jam has built a reputation
for discovering some amazing talent in the urban music industry.
Multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning artist Nelly Furtado was discovered by her manager at the 1997 showcase.
Other artists such as Michie Mee, Tara Chase, Londa Larmond, Alana Bridgewater,
True and Motion have all graced the Honey Jam stage. Jully Black, who recently signed a joint recording deal with
Universal Music Canada and MCA Records U.S., performed at the 1996 Honey Jam.
“We are delighted to be involved with PhemPhat and believe very strongly in
what they are doing for the community.
This is an exciting time in Urban music and Universal is going to do
what we can to help this great initiative along,” says Randy Lennox,
President/CEO of Universal Music Canada.
“Universal's
sponsorship is giving us the tools to provide enhanced access and opportunity
for artists to be seen and heard through our website, the promotional CD and
the showcase. We're very excited about the
partnership and to have this level of support for Canadian urban music,” says Ebonnie Rowe, CEO of PhemPhat Productions.

2. CALL FOR REEL BLACK AWARDS ENTRIES
The
Black Film & Video Network is proud to announce the call for entries for
the 13th Annual Reel Black Awards. The Reel Black Awards is designed to
recognize and acknowledge work of Black filmmakers from Canada and around the
globe. The awards were established in response to the minimal recognition
that black artists receive from mainstream awards and festivals. The work
of Black Canadians will always be the main focal point, although the works of
international filmmakers will continue to be recognized. Deadline: Friday June 14th
at 5:30pm.

June 2001 and June 2002.

Preview videos must be clearly labelled and should
be shipped in a suitable container. Please do not send masters,
originals or irreplaceable videos. Preview videos will not be
returned.

5. WADE O. BROWN GOES ON TOUR!
Wade O. Brown goes on tour this week
to promote his debut CD, COMPLETE. Wade O.
Brown, a Detroit native who has adopted Toronto as his home, is
a multi-talented producer, singer, keyboardist, songwriter and recording
artist. Wade’s soul/R&B sounds
reflect a gospel influence loaded with Motown energy. Wade O. Brown has co-written, co-produced,
created the musical arrangements and played most of the instruments on COMPLETE.
Wade’s tour takes him across western Canada and is sure to draw many more fans
to his work and those involved with this project!

Allen Harris is an award-winning filmmaker whose experimental works have been
featured in over 100 international festivals, museums and galleries. Vintage –
Families of Value (95) won a Golden Gate
Award at the San
Francisco Film Festival. Returning
to America after living in Tanzania threw teenaged Thomas Allen Harris into
turmoil. The African Methodist Episcopal church in which he was raised saw
Africa as a place that could only be saved through the intervention of
Christian missionaries. Yet Harris noticed that beneath the conventional
Christian iconography was a rich double life of African ancestral spirit
worship. Director Thomas Allen Harris will be in attendance.

KANI - BBPA’S LET’S TALK BUSINESS SPEAKER SERIES – SUNDAY, MAY 19, 2002
On Sunday May 19, 2002, the Black Business & Professional Association will
present KARL KANI, designer, innovator, entrepreneur and educator, as
the featured speaker in its quarterly Speakers Series. The event will be hosted by Nathan Downer of
FLOW 93.5
Karl Kani is the founder and designer of Karl Kani Jeans, Karl Kani Infinity,
Young Kani and, most recently, Kani Life, his most prized endeavour
representing the true essence of design, individuality, self-expression and
style for both men and women. Considered by many to be the godfather of hip hop
and urban fashion, Karl also founded his own record label called Kani Life
Records in 2001. Karl is a board
member of the NAACP and has also pioneered an entrepreneurial program that
educates children about running their own businesses by marketing and selling
Karl Kani merchandise. Take this
