tell you that Carl Henry’s light shone brightly during his two performances at

for! Special thanks to MuchMusic,

soul in Canada. FUNK N' SOUL begins
its legacy by proudly debuting Shawn Hewitt, a stunning new voice from
the Toronto underground scene. If you haven't heard of Shawn Hewitt yet ...you
will! This first edition of Funk N'
Soul would be incomplete without Canada's top Soultress, Divine Earth
Essence. Joining Divine will be Juno
award winning artist Haydain Neale "jacksoul". An ever-popular voice on our national
R&B scene, Wade O. Brown will add his honey sweet voice to the soul
crusade. The night will continue to
sizzle as Julie Crochetiere of "Sugar Jones" makes a special solo

DE LA SOUL & CHOCLAIR – THURSDAY, JUNE 6
Check out this night that is sure to bring
the house down at Kool Haus! If
you know a lil' something about the convergence of hip and hop, you're no doubt
familiar with Toronto's Choclair. Chances are, you've probably even heard of
one Kareem Blake. "Memoirs of
Blake Savage is just another way to let me express myself," explains Mr.
Savage himself. "I live my life as Kareem Blake and have to deal with
situations through that. And then all of a sudden, I become Choclair and have
to deal with those situations and still balance out my Kareem Blake life. So
it's just a way of digging even deeper into myself, and really putting myself
out there."
With De La Soul’s colourful, neo-psychedelic
collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever
rhymes and goofy humour, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. Where
most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public
Enemy's dense sonic barrage, De La
Soul was gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but
also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia.
