BLACK FILM & VIDEO CELEBRITY BRUNCH RECAP
What a success this well-attended
event was! It wasn’t just the mothers
in the house (with several tributes to their enduring strength), enjoyed these
presentations. From the spoken word
recitations by Vanessa Williams from her new poetry book Shine, to the vocal

PINK IN CONCERT!
With a shock of pink hair and sharp focus,
the latest R&B/pop artist to emerge from LaFace Records is on the rise. Her
rebellious streak and abundance of self-confidence have led Pink away from
creating the typical love songs that grace the Top 40 charts.
Since releasing her debut album, Can't
Take Me Home (2000), Pink has delivered her sophomore attempt, M!ssundaztood
(2001). She also earned her first Grammy Award nomination for "Lady
Marmalade," her collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Mya and L'il Kim
made for the film Moulin Rouge.

ALICIA KEYS IN CONCERT!
Her signature tune might be
"Fallin'," but 20 year-old Alicia Keys is a rising star in the music
world. Keys and her album Songs in A Minor, earned a slew of nominations at the
44th Grammy Awards. She took home the prize for Best Song of the Year, Best New
Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song and Best
R&B Album. Keys' natural talent was
shaped by classical piano training. She attended the Performance Arts School of
Manhattan and eventually coupled her rare mix of hip-hop flavour and song
writing with spine-tingling vocals. Five years after she began, Keys wrote,
produced and recorded the debut album she started penning at age 14.

LENNY KRAVITZ IN CONCERT!
Toronto fans can dig in to Lenny Kravitz's trademark brand of riveting rock 'n
roll. Kravitz returns to the Molson Amphitheatre stage after three years, with
the gritty popster Pink and alt-rock newcomers Abandoned Pools. Since his
1989 debut, Let Love Rule, Kravitz's song writing and production skills have
been on an upswing. His second album, Mama Said, gave him a number two hit with
"It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over." Are You Gonna Go My Way (1993),
Kravitz's third album, was a commercial success as was 1998's 5 -- . (we'll
overlook 1995's flop Circus) Kravitz is somewhat of a chameleon, with the
unquestionable ability to recreate the sound and feeling of countless groups
from the past. His music recalls everyone from Lennon, Hendrix, and Bowie to
Prince. But, Kravitz hasn't melded these influences into one distinctive style.
The result: each song on each of his albums sounds like it was recorded by a
different artist. With his ever-changing sound and style, one thing remains
constant; Kravitz's music might not be original, but it is quite enjoyable.
