2002 CANADIAN URBAN MUSIC AWARD NOMINEES

Well, despite all your best efforts, I didn’t quite make the nominations list for this years’ UMAC Awards.  It was a long shot considering I was up against major record label’s websites who have professional webmasters designing their sites - but I thank you for your support regardless and hopefully my name will be submitted again next year under a more appropriate category!  Over 20,000 votes – more than double from last year – were cast in 19 categories during on-line voting.  Winners will be announced at the 4th annual Urban X-Posure – Canada’s Urban Music Awards. The event takes place on Wednesday, July 31 at Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre. Television coverage of the Awards is being produced in association with Rogers Television.

Here’s the official list of nominees.

DONNELL JONES SHOOTS VIDEO IN JAMAICA

Excerpt from www.eurweb.com
:

R&B singer Donnell Jones was recently in the island working on the music video for his latest single "Put Me Down." The video was directed by Little X, and was shot on locations in Negril including the Rockhouse, Waves Beach, and the West End Main Road.  According to Maxine Walters, local production manager for the shoot, it was a great experience working with the singer. Miss Walters said Jones was quite a nice person, very pleasant and totally appreciative. There were 65 extras used in the production of the video, most of whom were recruited from Montego Bay, Kingston and Negril.

FIRST FRIDAYS RECAP

Not only is First Fridays the place to be when you are trying to network for your business, it’s also the perfect place to showcase your talents as well – as was evidenced by Carl Henry’s accapella performance last Friday.  Previous to this little insight into this talented artist’s repertoire, Cecil Collins, CEO of Cesoul Music (and Carl Henry’s label) explained his vision of having Canadian-owned record labels that showcase Canadian urban artists.  He also mentioned that while we need to support our urban radio stations, it is also important to support our local artists and independent labels.  One way to do that is to go to any record store and pick up Carl Henry’s hot CD entitled “RNB”!

ADVANCE NOTICE – ARETHA FRANKLIN – OCTOBER 5, 2002

c
all her Aretha or "Lady Soul" but this living legend is a natural woman who has inspired and influenced countless female vocalists.  Aretha Franklin, has been dubbed the Queen of Soul. Not too shabby for a gal raised by her father (one of the most famous black ministers in the North), and her aunt, (legendary gospel singer Clara Ward). Franklin grew up singing in her father's New Bethel Baptist Church in Motown, but it wasn't until 1966, that her career skyrocketed. She belted out hits like "I Never Loved a Man," "Respect," "Natural Woman," and "Chain of Fools." In 1968, she made the cover of Time.   Her 1985 album, Who's Zoomin' Who, racked up her biggest sales. A 1989 gospel album, inspired by her father's coma and death (he was shot by a burglar) in 1984, earned another Grammy (15 in total) for her crowded shelf. She became the first female performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Grammy Legend Award (1991) and was honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1994) and countless other citations, awards and accolades.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5

FEMI KUTI IN CONCERT – THURSDAY, JULY 11

Do you love the rhythms and sounds of Africa?  Then this exceptional full-stage concert is definitely one to witness!  Kicking off the World's Fare festival is FEMI KUTI, the undisputed inheritor of the genius of his father, Nigerian Afro-beat star Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Femi Kuti marks his July return to Toronto with his new record, "Fight to Win". The disc contains Femi's distinctive version of Afro-beat, borrowing the best elements from his father's powerfully polyrhythmic prototype: a funky, jazzy, heavily percussive sound that took James Brown's beat back to Africa. Femi adds to that winning formula the freshness and exuberance of young Lagos and its taste for the new R&B and dance music of America and Europe.
