1. HARRY JEROME AWARDS – SATURDAY, APRIL
20, 2002
The 20th Annual Harry Jerome
Awards were held last Saturday evening.
The awards dinner was hosted by comedian
and FLOW 93.5 FM's Kenny Robinson and CP24’s Juliette Powell,
looking elegant in her David Spencer couture. Of course the favourite parts for me
were the elements involving music. The
amazingly talented Alana Bridgewater opened the show with “Lift Ev’ry
Voice”. She created a wave of
enthusiastic reaction from the audience!
Others included jacksoul and the Washington Savage Orchestra featuring
Divine Earth Essence. Great
performances! Toronto
Argonauts President Michael "Pinball" Clemons and CFTO TV’s Andria
Case hosted the awards ceremony. It
was a long, long night for the awards portion of the evening. Michael and Andria handled the evening with
utter charm and tried to reign in the length of some of the speeches. However, most of the speeches were well worth
hearing (although some long) including Bromley Armstrong whose wit won
over the honoured audience. Also of
note was the speech that Wes “Maestro” Williams made quoting scripture
and leaving us with “Do not be afraid of failure, for to be afraid of failure
is to be afraid of success.” Another
touching highlight was a special tribute to Beverly Mascoll, who the
community lost last year to cancer.
Each and every award winner absolutely deserved the limelight and this
auspicious acknowledgement of their accomplishments. Congratulations to all the award recipients!

MOTION – WINNER
On Wednesday, April 17, 2002, Motion’s
incredible "CONNECT THE T-DOTS" was declared the WINNER of CBC
Radio’s first-ever National Poetry Face-Off. This sensational piece, invoking
images of No Frills, "The Love Zone" on Flow and The Don Jail
captured our hearts here at home and throughout the entire country. Motion and
“T-DOT” were victorious over eight other poets from across Canada. Motion would like to thank everyone who cast
his or her vote in her favour. If you
didn't get a chance to experience CONNECT THE T-DOTS, you can still listen
to it on www.motionlive.com. Also, you
can catch Motion live twice this week!! Join us Thursday, April 25th for
the African Heritage Unity Tour at The Bamboo, where Motion will be hitting the
stage along with Blessed, Godzillah, Donna Makeda and more. Doors open at
9pm. On Friday, April 26th,
Courage Artists and Touring will be bringing Motion to Whiskey Saigon at
midnight. Keep
an eye out for the upcoming feature on Motion in the May issue of WORD
MAGAZINE...
