NEWS

1.            AWAOVIEYI AGIE – ANOTHER CANADIAN ACTOR “MAKING IT”

It’s always exciting for me when news hits about an incredible Canadian talent that gets a big break!  Our own Awaovieyi Agie has accomplished just that.  He is in glorious Hawaii shooting a major feature film in a principal role.  The film is currently entitled “Hostile Rescue” which is about U.S. Marines (led by Bruce Willis) who are
sent into the jungle of the heart of Nigeria on a search-and-rescue mission for a doctor (Monica Belluci) before civil war breaks out. Awaovieyi plays the part of Musa, a Nigerian Muslim cook at a mission.  Musa quickly realizes that he, too, must evacuate his homeland that is war-torn, or be killed.   Awaovieyi’s role is basically the voice of the Nigerian people throughout the entire film.  Akosua Busia (Nettie, The Color Purple) plays Awaovieyi’s beautiful wife.  The entire project is being directed by the brilliant Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Replacement Killers).  Production started in late March 2002 in Oahu, Hawaii (subbing for Africa). Filming is tentatively scheduled to wrap in late June 2002 and the release date is tentatively for Spring 2003.  Congratulations to Awaovieyi!!

RECAPS

2.            REELWORLD FILM FESTIVAL RECAP

What a festival!  Although I was not able to catch as many films as I would have liked, I was able to catch the two interviews with Robert Townsend and Eriq LaSalle.  Robert Townsend (interviewed by Cameron Bailey) was, as anticipated, very animated and comedic in his dialogue and really laid out some truths for the collection of actors, directors, producers and film fans alike.  Mr. Townsend’s
MTV remake of George Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen,Carmen: A Hip Hopera”, was also featured in the festival.  Eriq LaSalle (interviewed by Juliette Powell) also spoke on his latest project, Crazy As Hell, the closing gala film for the festival.  Sharing personal experiences along with wise direction as a result of their experiences was for the asking.  They answered questions from the audience honestly and poignantly, encouraging those in the industry to believe in their projects and themselves.

I was privileged to catch the festival’s closing film – Crazy as Hell,
the feature directorial debut of Eriq La Salle.  This film was totally riveting, thought-provoking while at the same time, disturbing.  In the story based on novelist Jeremy Leven's Satan, Michael Beach plays Dr. Ty Adams, a maverick psychiatrist whose unconventional, non-medical approach to treating patients has crowned him a king in some circles – and an egomaniac in others.  The acting was extraordinary by the entire cast, but specifically Michael Beach and Eriq LaSalle (who starred as Satan in this feature) – gripping performances!  What an ending!  The cinematography as well definitely needs mentioning.  I can’t go on enough about this film – it captured me and I do believe most people who saw it will be talking about it in the days to come.  Please look out for other screenings of this film – I will keep you posted when it’s back in town.

Awards were presented to filmmakers in the following categories:

EVENT PROFILE:  SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - Please mark your calendars for Friday, April 19th as Major League Entertainment brings to you a launch from Iman Cosmetics!!  Unlike many cosmetic companies who simply expanded existing shade ranges in an effort to satisfy women of colour, every item in the IMAN collection was specifically formulated for this growing market of women. Derived from Iman's personal and professional cosmetic experience, formulas were developed from a realistic standpoint, as only a woman of colour would conceive. Now there is a vast variety of skin-tone and skincare they can rely on.  Iman is involved in every aspect of IMAN Cosmetics and Skincare business - Product development, package design, marketing, promotion and advertising. She has assembled a team of experts and advisors to ensure that her company utilizes the newest ingredients and advanced technology to develop superior products for women of colour.  IMAN redefines current cosmetic marketing terminology. Until now, terms such as 'women of colour' and 'ethnic' have been associated with products developed for African American women. "I believe that women of colour, are the women of the world - Native American, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, African and Middle Eastern. These women live right here in this country," Iman points out, "It's time to address the concerns of this "invisible" consumer because today's minorities are tomorrow's majority."  Come join all the fun brought to you by Iman Cosmetics!!
